Leadership Academy Programme launches to support future research leaders

Read time: 2 minutes

The College of Science and Engineering recently launched an initiative that supports mid-career academics to see leadership as something that is both rewarding and attainable. The Leadership Academy Programme (LAP) is set to nurture a vibrant research environment across the University by developing academic leadership skills and confidence.  The Academy’s first cohort includes 30 research leaders from across the University, known as “LAP Landers”.

Cross-College collaboration

The Leadership Academy Programme is a cross-college collaboration with the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, and the Institute for Academic Development.

Running over nine months, the programme is delivered through monthly one hour online webinars, incorporating interactive discussions, experience sharing and networking opportunities. Each workshop will explore topics from leadership styles, team dynamics, strategic thinking, to Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion, helping participants understand what effective leadership looks like.

Key takeaways from the first session:

“TEAM – Together Everyone Achieves More”

Professor Kev Dhaliwal from the Centre of Inflammation Research shared insights and lessons learned from his own leadership journey in the first online session. He spoke about his “people and team first” philosophy, characterised by kindness, care, and collaboration. He talked about the importance of managing your energy, mission driven engagement and building lasting professional relationships, summed up his approach with the acronym “TEAM — Together Everyone Achieves More”.

Participants also took part in a breakout activity where they conceptualised an interdisciplinary project on sustainable communities. Following this exercise, the group were asked to reflect on what they had learnt and how they could improve their listening skills, contribution and collaboration in the future.

Looking ahead

Over the next few months, the “LAP Landers” will continue to build their leadership skills through sessions on inclusive leadership and how to have important conversations.

The programme will conclude in June with an in person celebration event at the Edinburgh Futures Institute, bringing everyone together to reflect on their journey and recognise all they have achieved during the programme. Liz Baggs, Vice-Principal for Research and Innovation has been confirmed as a guest speaker.
