Student Support – Here for you

The University is committed to providing its students with effective academic guidance and wellbeing support. Our aim is for students to have access to a support ecosystem of high quality and consistent support that meets our students’ needs.

We want to take this opportunity to update you on what that means for you, and what services and support are available to guide and support you through your student journey at the University of Edinburgh.

Student Advisers

All Undergraduate and Postgraduate Taught students now have a dedicated Student Adviser, specially trained to support you during your studies. Your Student Adviser is a named individual who will be your first point of contact for any support, including:

  • Your studies
  • Your wellbeing
  • Practical matters

Your Student Adviser does not work alone, instead working in an ecosystem of support within the University. As your main point of contact, your Student Adviser can help navigate you to the right support service or resource for you, such as our Wellbeing Advisers, Wellbeing Services or your Cohort Lead. Your Student Adviser will get in touch with you to introduce themselves, and you can find your Student Adviser’s contact details on the Studies tab on MyEd.

Cohort Leads

Cohort Leads are academic members of staff who support a group – or cohort – of students with their studies. Their role is to create a sense of community for you and other students on your programme through group activities such as academic drop-ins, field trips and celebrations of key events.

Your Cohort Lead will get in touch with you to introduce themselves and invite you to their first events. Engaging with them and the activities they plan will help you connect to your peers, develop your academic skills and provide you with academic support through your University career.

In addition, your wider teaching team will also be able to provide help when you need academic advice on a course or specific class.

Student Wellbeing Service

The Student Wellbeing Service is part of a range of health and wellbeing services available to all University students, working alongside Schools and existing services such as the Student Counselling and Disability and Learning Support Services.

As part of the Student Wellbeing Service, all Schools will have Wellbeing Advisers who you can speak to if you are experiencing any wellbeing-related issues that are affecting your health, wellbeing, studies or personal life. Wellbeing Advisers can then provide you with advice and guidance, or discuss and link you up with our other University services or external agencies.
