Dazed and confused…..

Trying to think of a topic for the assignment.  Just listened to Rachel Ellaway’s interview  around digital professionalism which was very good.  Listening to the recording of the tutorial on Thursday with Tim, Yannis and Harveen was helpful – Tim said that we should look for something that interests us…. I was really interested in the article through OpenDemocracy by Carol Molloy on ‘will big tech save the NHS – or eat it alive?’  The idea of conditional healthcare creeping in and that we are expected to look after ourselves in exchange for healthcare and how the ability to take responsibility for our own health is a bit dependant on socio-economic factors.  There are already suggestions the NHS should be collecting data on what food shop people buy, gym attendance….collecting health data from apps that monitor sleep, diet, exercise.  Some suggestion  that ‘healthy’ individuals should be rewarded through tax rebates or jumping the NHS queue when they do get ill.  Also mentioned is the social issue around the ‘healthy’ being smug over the ‘unhealthy’ and less sympathetic…..you brought it on yourself kind of comments – although I think there is something in that!   We have black boxes now in cars for insurance purposes…. when will we have black boxes in our fridge to monitor diets??

Another thought is around posts on social media.  A wellbeing clinic near me did a post on Reiki and how it boosts the immune system so with all the bugs going around currently… this is a pretty irresponsible post as 1. there is no concrete good evidence that Reiki does this 2. it’s playing on the fears of Covid-19 3. It may lull people into a false sense of security…I’ve been for Reiki so I’m ok.  Does this fall into the realm of digital professionalism?

Are these possible ideas I can use?

I think the moral / ethical balancing act you consider when addressing ‘conditional healthcare’ is absolutely spot on. I think this is an absolutely ideal topic to explore further!

  2. Tim Fawns says:

I had a thought about gamification and conditional healthcare… maybe your fridge will start to award points for healthy items and take away points for unhealthy items…

  3. Yannis Tsougkos says:

Haha, the fridge will automatically lock when your BMI is out of normal range..
Seriously now this could be a useful tool for monitoring and optimising healthcare.
