After new environmental regulations are announced, farmers in the Idukki district of Kerala, India, are faced with an unenviable choice: lose their livelihood, or fight and risk being called anti-Nature.
Farmers in the Idukki district of Kerala, India, protested against new environmental regulations during 2011-13. The media claimed their protests were influenced by quarry mafias and other vested interests. Nonetheless, the protests worked. But with climate change-induced heavy rainfall, flash floods and landslides wreaking havoc in the state today, whispers of the same environmental regulations are once again heard. The farmers will fight once again. But not before they speak their truth about their ongoing battles for land, livelihood and climate justice; otherwise hidden away from the outside world under the lush green canopy of the Western Ghats.
