Module 3: indicators for beyond ‘time online’
Clear guidelines, expectations and boundaries
I think it is important to make it clear to students what is contact time and when I/we are available. So I would tell them when my office hours are (real time, synchronous), I might cycle them every week if there are different time zones. I would also emphasise that they can expect a reply within three working days (not including weekend!). To be honest this is something I already do.
New things related to online teaching for main theory course:
1) I would have prompts in my lectures/classes and forum threads so I would explain to them the timeframe for their participation, and how I/we will be present online (making sure they are going in the right direction, the conversation will be theirs to have, we will intervene/ feed into these to highlight certain things but it is their space).
2) Google hangouts (or similar) monthly (?): email students to give them timeframe etc).
Tutors could be dealing with the forums? Then Lecturers oversee.
How about Portfolio? Small practical classes. Synchronous class, as we do the non online one? ask them to discuss a couple of difficult points in a forum?
