Module 2. Unknowns

We have never taught online so it’s all unknown to me!

1) how to deal with diverse cohort of students (different learning backgrounds). We had to think about this in face-to-face teaching but now that the students will not be there it seems more difficult. And there are timezones to consider.  Michael has already suggested cycling teaching throughout the semester which might be a good solution if the whole cohort is online but if we have students on campus as well, it might be more problematic.

2) We also have no idea how many students will show up (online or physically). How can I meet all the 50-80 students without spending my whole life online?

3) How do I make sure that students who are used to be teaching face-to-face engage and enjoy with online teaching?

4) Which software will be best for my course (MSc in Translation Studies). Collaborate for lectures whether of synchronous or a-synchronous teaching. Which other ones?

5) When doing group work I usually try to mix groups, so that the students come from different learning backgrounds and cultures. But with timezones I might have to have groups according to where the students come from to make it easier for them? Or can I expect students to work across timezones?

6) My teaching style is highly interactive, how I can still do this online?

7) How do you create a sense of community when every is scattered around the globe?

    So many questions but I hope you are beginning to see that you already have some ideas of how to approach them. There are so many possible things you could do, it’s important to remember not to overload yourself with tasks.

    That’s why we have been recommending concentrating on a short list of technologies to start with (e.g. Learn, Collaborate, Media Hopper). Things done simply and with care are more likely to reap benefits. And students will appreciate that they don’t have too many new things to grasp too (as the programme itself will likely be challenge enough).
