January Monthly Staff Series: Enterprise Architecture

Hello to 2025 readers, and welcome to the latest monthly staff blog post, all about…

Enterprise Architecture Architects

We are a small team, comprising a data architect, CRM architect, and integration architect, along with a contractor working on Curriculum Transformation. We are not a formal team in the organisation structure as each of us reports directly to the head of section.

What do the Enterprise Architecture Architects do?

We provide advice and guidance in our respective domains – data, CRM and integration. We support services, projects & procurements with specialist advice, and delve into the details of relevant technologies. We also maintain information about systems in our EA Repository tool, Abacus.

Examples of our work include:

  • Data modelling for the data warehouse
  • Working with Estates to build their applications catalogue
  • Several CRM implementation, migration and consolidation projects’
  • Delivering reusable APIs and Web Services for core university systems.
  • Leading the migration from the old integration middleware over to WSO2 Choreo
  • Analysing the impact that curriculum transformation may have on ISG services

How does this work connect with other Application sections?

Our work can help project managers and business analysts spot opportunities and avoid pitfalls. We can help production managers and developers record and find how systems hang together and relate to the rest of the organisation.

We work with service owners across for how to link systems using our integration platform. We provide support, training, planning, design and assist with development of integrations.

We help to support the use of CRM (Salesforce) and maintain an instance used by other teams across ISG.

Are there any upcoming projects the team is excited about?

  • Investigating options for integrating the student recruitment enquiry management system with other student recruitment services
  • Using business capabilities to help describe the University’s Digital Estate
  • Completing the rollout of our integration service, called Choreo. This is a flexible platform that can auto-scale according to our needs.
  • Publishing a web service catalogue.
  • Helping to streamline the data flows around research management
  • Completing the analysis of how the Curriculum Transformation initiative may impact ISG services

Are there any special/hidden talents within the team?

  • Playing music (trumpet & guitar)
  • Sailing little boats (and living on a big boat!)
  • Tai Chi (head of the section!)
  • Wine tasting

If you could take a guess, how many cups of tea/coffee/hot chocolate does the team get through on an average day?

8-9 coffees (not counting the section head’s 3 diet cokes!)

In a sentence what makes this team great?

All the talents, and a great range of characters.
