David with only his staff, sling and five stones defeats the formidable fighter Goliath with one shot, a stone hits the giant directly on the forehead, causing him to fall to the ground.
The story represents hope for the underdog who challenges the mighty and reminds us great strength can be defeated by strategic attack. This story of courage and succeeding despite the odds is a good place to start when speculating about the future of ethical AI. It can be difficult to see the future through a utopian lens when the odds are against us but we must be tactical and strategic if we are to be victorious.

In the report, ‘What Mobilises People to Go Against Big Tech?’ Carmi & Nakou (2023) conducted semi-structured interviews with digital rights and digital literacies organisations. Participants found it difficult to imagine a just and democratic digital eco system.
”When we asked the participants how an ideal world would look like if they had all the resources possible, many of them found it difficult to imagine such a future and consequently what can be done. We think this is an important insight because if we cannot imagine what we want and how to verbalise it that means we are still operating within the current possibilities without being able to demand the future we want.” (Carmi & Nakou, 2023, p.24)
Activity 9 A Future Scenario
Below is my future imagining of student reflections after participating in an imagined collaborative Digital Literacy and Ethics course at a UK university. It represents my own desired future the role Higher Education might play in seeking transparency in AI.
In the last part of the conversation with Dr.Timnit Gebru, what recommendations does she give and how does she respond to the final question: ‘‘What gives you hope?”
