The “Casier archéologique et artistique”: an early experimentation of heritage planning for the “Grand Paris”, 1916-1928
In the 1910-1920’s, an architectural and urban survey, the « Casier archéologique et artistique », was constituted for Paris and the communes of the former Seine’s department. Early reflections are at the origin of this survey : it had been thought, half a century before the adoption of the Malraux law for “safeguarded areas” (secteurs sauvegardés), to proceed with what would eventually be called “heritage urbanism”, with the prospect of the ‘Grand Paris’ then in preparation. The aim of this presentation is to reveal the actors, the issues and the evolutions of the pionneer survey, as well as its uses.
Laurence Bassières
Laurence Bassières is a lecturer in History of architecture at the School of architecture of Paris – La Villette, and a member of the AHTTEP laboratory (UMR AUSser). Architect and doctor of History of Architecture, her research focuses on the heritage and urban policies, in France and in Europe, and on the history of the “Grand Paris”, during the first half of the 20th century. She participates in several research programs linked to these subjects (Inventer le Grand Paris, Usages de l’histoire and A Genealogy of urban design). She is also a member of the Commission du Vieux Paris, secretary of the journal Livraisons d’histoire de l’architecture and a member of the reading committee of the journal Transversale.
