Abbotsford is the world famous creation of Sir Walter Scott, Scotland’s greatest writer and arguably the most influential Scot who has ever lived. The £10million pound project included a comprehensive programme of fabric conservation and upgrading; collections conservation; alterations to form new support facilities including accommodation for short-term let; and construction of a new car park and visitor centre housing interpretation spaces, a destination café and a shop in one of the most important designed landscapes in Scotland.

The Abbotsford project won the European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Award in 2014, as well as a number of other awards.

Mark Hopton is a partner in LDN Architects and was responsible for leading the design team responsible for the Abbotsford Project.  He is RIAS Conservation Accredited at Advanced Level and has delivered a number of award-winning conservation projects including Newhailes for the National Trust for Scotland; the fifteen year development of Stanley Mills, another Europa Nostra Award winner; and the redevelopment of the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh.  He learned a lot about Sir Walter during the course of the project and has even managed to read a number of his books.

The Masterclass will be chaired by Dr. Lester Borley CBE, a former chairman of Europa Nostra UK.
