As can be seen from my post titled Funding, I am working with a budget of £3000 to cover room hire, publication, material costs, artist fees, website/ archiving, promotional posters, insurance and event costs. In this post I want to go in detail through what I expect my expenditure to look like, allowing for the support of local businesses and for all artists involved to be paid a full living wage, as indicated by the Scottish Artist’s Union Rates of Pay.
Room Hire
Each venue is visited 3 times over the course of the 3 months, once per month. From my experience setting up Gurrl Dinner, I believe that I will need one hour for setting up and half an hour to pack away my workshops. This means that each venue, factoring in the two hours whilst the workshops run, will be hired for 3 and a half hours. Where the venues don’t allow for half an hour, I will budget for 4 hours, using the time to collate the works onto the website (something happening at zero cost due to it being completed by myself).
Juniper Green Church Hall: As this will be a repeated let the rate is £18 per hour. 18 x 4 = £72 per session. 72 x 3 months is £216 for the project.
Lauriston Hall: I will be using the Small Hall, costing £45 per hour. 45 x 4 = £180 per session. 180 x 3 = £540 for the project.
Walpole Hall: There is potential for a reduction in rate here as the workshops will be for community benefit, but currently this venue is £30 per hour. 30 x 4 = £120 per session. 120 x 3 = £360 for the project.
Salisbury Centre: I will here be using the Art Room, and as I am hiring for 4 hours on a Friday, I can use the off-peak price of £73 per session. 73 x 3 = £219 for the project.
Using these prices places my complete expenditure for the workshop venue hire at £1335.
Publication
As described in my post on Publications, I am going to record the project in the form of a free zine that can be taken away. This is going to be A3, double sided, that can then fold and unfold to either be a poster or a zine. To reduce costs I am going to design the zine myself, using my degree in Fine Art. In Week 9 Adam Benmakhlouf mentioned how their project that lasted a year had 150 copies, but warned us of over printing. For that reason with my project being 3 months long and hosting approx 20 attendees per workshop, I will print 100 copies. If there are any spares I can use them as further recycled collage materials.
I am going to print with a company called Stampa as they are an independent business who prioritise ethical printing practice using only recycled papers. They calculate 100 pages A3, printed double sided on 100gsm standard recycled paper will be £96.
Posters
To reduce carbon emissions of postage I will also print my promotional posters through Stampa. Going in shop windows and around the city, these will be A3 and single sided. The cost to print 20 of these is £22.
Website/ Online Archive
My website will be designed and hosted through Canva. A professional membership for this is £13 per month which I will use for the three months the network is running. 3 x 13 = £36. I intend to purchase the domain stick-with-it.com which costs £17 per year to renew. Canva does not charge a hosting fee as long as you maintain a free account with them, so I will pay to preserve the website as an archive for 5 Years. I can then donate it to the Glasgow Women’s Archive (£0). 17 x 5 = £85. 85 + 36 = £121
Insurance
To be covered working with the public (public liability insurance) I will renew my membership of Artist Union Scotland, which gives free cover as part of their membership. This is £6.50 per month. 6.5 x 3 = £19.5
Artist Talk Costs
The cost of an artist talk includes artist fees. I am paying each artist according to the fair wages from the Scottish Artist Union. This is £175 for a half day of preparation, plus £66 for the artist talk lasting 1.5 hours. I will factor in £30 contribution towards the artist’s travel each. 175+66+30 = £271 per artist. 271 x 3 = £813.
Each artist talk requires 1.5 hours of additional hall time. For Juniper Green this is £36. For Walpole Hall this is £60. For the Salisbury Centre this is £29. 36+60+29= £125.
Per session I will also budget in £10 for refreshments. 10 x 3 = £30.
The total cost of my public programming is therefore £968. Although this is expensive, I think it will be a beneficial and welcoming addition to my project.
Miscellaneous Event Costs
For things that I can decorate the venues with such as soft furnishings and table cloths I am budgeting £50 to find these items in charity shops. These will be reused throughout my network and so do not need to be repurchased.
Per month I will budget £20 towards flowers to, as described by Sarah Corbett in ‘How to be a Craftivist’, make the space welcoming. 20 x 3 =£60
I will use my pre-existing collection of classical Vinyl records and record player to play music for the sessions, making this cost £0.
I will produce the leaflets and guidance about the workshops myself, printing these as a one off cost at the local library. This is £0.30 per sheet of colour and I will make enough for 10 copies that can be reused across the weeks. 0.3 x 10 = £3
Materials
From my £3000 budget this gives me £325.50 to spend on materials. This easily covers their cost, allowing me approx. £107 per month to spend between my local businesses (see materials post), re-buying things like paper and ribbon regularly whilst scissors will be a one time cost.
Expenditure Table
Here is a table outlining how my budget will be spend. When completing my funding applications, I can reference this document.
