Annoying designs

This post document random things I find interesting (or annoying). I think it would be good to revisit them when I start on my project. More updates to come.

  1. This wine pretends to be small-batch. Like how AI images try to look more human-made, large brands try to look more spontaneous and un-designed. Do we praise their creativity for stealing the trust and connection linked to the semiotics of the un-designed aesthetics?

“The SALDO aesthetic suggests small batch experimental wines, but SALDO is in fact a large volume, commercial brand. So print finishes were carefully chosen to not only make the labels feel like hand-applied tape, but also run down a fast bottling line – a technical feat that supports both the brand’s narrative and operational needs.”

2. Emotive ads

I can’t find this Kia ad online. It showed people playing drums on the street, and then cut to scenes of beautiful Kia cars. The tagline “movement that inspires” seem to hint at two different types of movements. I did find their website though, which claims “With the new Kia, we will move beyond being a traditional car manufacturer, to becoming a mobility brand.” I understand this is happening everywhere, you don’t sell the product, you sell the lifestyle, the aura.

And this O2 ad… O2’s slogan is “Essential for Living”, and this ad just talks about how you cannot survive without oxygen? This feels a little evil.

This John Lewis ad.

3. Women laughing alone with salad
