how to scatter

Here’s a post about some technical structures. Let me know what you think!

————

In my previous blog, I referenced a prose essay that is visually scattered around a map of a physical location.

How does my information scatter? Here are a few options:

1. Isolated items are presented to you randomly, and they may even be different every time. Maybe lean into the mystery rubbish bag idea.

2. Start with big categories, and use each item as an example. They each then link to other big ideas or case studies. You can choose the bigger topic you’re interested in, but once you’re inside you can explore it like walking in a maze with connection points everywhere.

3. Some sort of web structure, that links each item to a few big ideas, like this: Living Heritage and Sustainable Development. This is more of a god’s perspective.

4. Grid. Every case study is plotted on a rectangular space (see sketch below).

5. Some kind of reveal system. Some initial thoughts are A) character filters — click different characters and see different things; one can see a packaging design as nostalgic or cultured, and another sees it as colonial. B) use conversations between the viewer and the site as a mechanism to reveal things or link things. I need to make sure not to make it judgemental or cheesy.

Technically, it’s gonna be difficult/expensive! But I do believe the structure could reflect the theme in interesting ways and it’s worth exploring.

Something physical

Even if it end up being a webpage, I still want something physical, maybe making my own paper with recycled packaging, and use that to bound a book/make a flyer/sticker?

Also what about a vending machine, with essays put in boxes (designed in the style of snacks?)

Thanks for reading!
