Week 8: Collective Meeting – Reflection of SCIP Toolkit Requirements

Week 8 Collective meeting:

This meeting was conducted after a presentation that expanded on the SCIP toolkit that we were provided with at the beginning of this module, listing the advanced requirements of our individual curatorial project. I noted the emphasis on curatorial ethics. Reflecting on the presentation alongside the other members of my collective, I have come to realize that these are especially important tasks within my individual project. I intend to have my exhibition operate as a space that elevates the voices of artists who have been underrepresented (hence the majority of my chosen artists are graduates) as well as perspectives from individuals who represent the voices of restricted groups of people who suffer the most at the hands of capitalism and climate change. I think this is a necessary step when curating an exhibition that focuses on ecology. Climate change is a global issue; therefore, a colonial Western perspective would do little to provoke the kind of institutional or reflective change to re-examine our role within the Anthropocene. However, as discussed in my analysis of the Rooting exhibition, the inclusion of these perspectives for capitalistic purposes is just as exploitative as the system that limits their voices in the first place. Additionally, this has spurred further reflection on the curatorial procedures of the Hunterian and Tramway art galleries. The consideration of the artist’s individual requirements must be taken into account. The pieces that I hope to include in my project are inherently tied to the unique perspectives of the artists, and to exclude their voices in the development of the exhibition would be just as limiting as the capitalistic systems that have restricted the expression that I hope to elevate.

Action:

To ensure that in all parts of the curatorial process there are no actions that could be considered inadvertently exploitative, I will conduct research into the correct communication procedure between curator and artist, as well as the appropriate forms of compensation that must be offered to all collaborators within my proposed exhibition.
