Reflections and Responses to Recent Teacher Feedback and Tutorial Suggestions
I have recently reviewed and digested the blog feedback provided by Frances and the further suggestions I received during the recent Tutorial, and the following are my reflections and plans for next steps.
Deepening on Joseph Beuys’ theory of “everyone is an artist”:
My teacher pointed out that my understanding of Joseph Beuys‘ classic theory “Everyone is an Artist” was still superficial, and failed to fully reflect Beuys’ original meaning of social transformation and collaborative creativity. This reminds me that I need to dig deeper into the social meaning behind this theory and its potential in the contemporary context. Next, I will read relevant literature (e.g., Beuys’ interviews, anthologies, and contemporary art reviews) to reinterpret the concept from a more comprehensive perspective.
On the richness of curatorial theory and methodology:
My teacher has particularly emphasised that the references and practical explorations of contemporary curatorial methods and theories in my blogs are not sufficient, and that there is still much room for improvement in terms of the learning objectives required by the course. This is the part I need to prioritise most for improvement at the moment.
Next, I plan to:
Read in-depth key literature such as Johanna Zylinska’s AI Art: Machine Visions and Warped Dreams to build a more solid theoretical foundation for my project;
collect and analyse more contemporary curatorial cases related to AI art (e.g. Refik Anadol’s curatorial practice, Google Arts & Culture’s AI-related projects, and the AI art exhibition at the Barbican in London), from which I will clarify the uniqueness and theoretical positioning of my own curatorial proposal.
Reflection and correction of the case study approach in the previous blog:
In the blog analysing the Digging in Another Time exhibition, I realised that I had overlooked the holistic nature of the exhibition’s curatorial practice, and had failed to present a complete picture of the commissions made by contemporary artists in response to Jarman’s work. This reflection has helped me to clarify the direction of my future writing: it is important to accurately distinguish between artistic creation and curatorial practice, and to avoid any misinterpretation of the artist’s work itself or any confusion between the roles of art and curatorship.
Follow-up blog writing and project progress arrangement:
Based on the above reflection and the suggestions made by my teacher, I plan to:
- Make a clear distinction between artistic and curatorial practice, and write future blogs with clarity and precision;
- Cite and discuss theoretical literature more actively to build up a richer theoretical support for curating;
- further clarify the positioning of my project in contemporary curatorial practice through horizontal comparison of curatorial cases.
