Week7 Blog ( 1 )|One-day Field Trip to Glasgow

This week, Our class had the opportunity to have a captivating curatorial course in Glasgow that enriched both my academic and personal perspectives.

Hunterian Museum in Glasgow.

⚪️ Hunterian Museum

As a member of Group C, my day began at the Hunterian Art Gallery where I explored the Hunterian Museum from 10.30 to 11.10.

Multimedia Interactive Display Screen in the History Exhibition Area.

The Hunterian Museum is divided into two parts, introducing history and modern art.

I was immediately drawn into the historical narratives and innovative display techniques that brought the exhibits to life.

⚪️ Downstairs Gallery

Exhibition title.

Next, I visited the Downstairs Gallery, which offered a more intimate space for reflection, before attending an engaging curatorial introduction to the Jarman exhibition and films.

The curator introduces the space.

Among them, the curator emphasized the fit between the curatorial space and the exhibition theme. In order to make the space and the exhibition more coordinated, the background color of each space and the height of the background wall are carefully designed, and the functionality of the space is well divided.

This session not only deepened my understanding of artistic storytelling but also broadened my view on the interplay between visual art and film.

⚪️ Tramway

After a lunch break, we travelled to the Tramway, where Claire Jackson’s talk further illuminated contemporary curatorial practices.

I then had the chance to explore Leanne Ross’s work, the exhibition features many sound-related curatorial approaches.

⚪️ GOMA

The final part of my day took me to GOMA, where visits to Gallery 4 and Gallery 2 allowed me to appreciate diverse artistic expressions and curatorial layouts.

Overall, the experience was both educational and inspiring, leaving me with invaluable insights for my future in museum studies and curatorial work.

Reflection:

During this field trip in Glasgow, I deeply felt the delicate balance between “space – narrative – viewer”. For example, at the Hunterian Museum, through the careful arrangement of multimedia interactive screens and historical exhibition areas, I felt the organic integration of traditional narrative and modern display technology; at the Downstairs Gallery, the background color and wall height of the exhibition hall complemented the theme of the exhibits, and every detail in the exhibition was closely related to the theme and content of the exhibition, allowing the audience to immerse themselves in the quiet atmosphere; Claire Jackson’s lecture at Tramway broadened my understanding of contemporary curatorial strategies, especially in terms of spatial interaction. Tramway also allowed me to see the transformation of different public space functions from the train station, and the special imprint of the track added atmosphere to the entire exhibition space; finally, strolling in the diverse exhibition halls of GOMA made me appreciate the infinite possibilities of different artistic expressions and layout methods. Overall, this day not only enriched my understanding of the relationship between curatorial space and exhibition themes, but also made me realize the diversity of curating. Curating is not a single behavior, but a decision made after considering various factors. It also provided me with valuable inspiration on how to create a more experiential exhibition path in museum curating in the future.
In general, this field trip not only strengthened my understanding of the concept of “field is narrative”, but also provided specific practical ideas for “Echoes of Silence” in terms of technology, space and audience participation. I look forward to incorporating these inspirations into my exhibition design.
