Week1 Blog|Basho brainstorming on the core concepts of “curation”

This week’s course revolved around curating. Through group discussions and brainstorming, we sorted out the core concepts, key elements and responsibilities of curating. Finally, we drew a mind map on a large piece of paper and sorted out the important aspects of curatorial practice. This process not only helped us understand the multi-faceted nature of curating, but also prompted us to think deeply about the responsibilities that curators should bear.

⚫️ Vital elements and responsibilities of curating

1. Core elements of curating

Objects: Involving works of art in different media (such as painting, sculpture, video, performance, etc.), curators need to consider the selection, arrangement and presentation of works.
Value: Curating shapes the visibility of art and affects its cultural, social and economic significance.
Influence & Development: Curating promotes cultural development, promotes artistic discussion, and provides more opportunities for artists from different backgrounds.

2. Responsibilities of curating

Protecting Objects: Ensure the safety of artworks during storage, transportation and display.
Transparency: The curatorial process must disclose the source of the works, the curatorial logic and the way the funds are operated.
Ethics: Avoid exploiting artists and ensure that curating is inclusive and socially responsible.
Clear Communication: Improve audience understanding through curatorial texts, exhibition layout and interactive design.
Layout & Display: Optimize the exhibition space and the form of work display to enhance the viewing experience.
