Victims Killed by Their Parents
Many young people now decide to reduce or even cut ties with their parents and rebuild their lives as isolated individuals. After trauma, even adults need adequate social support to get through it, and family and friends are extremely important. When children speak out about their experiences of sexual abuse, they are often met with suspicion and criticism from their parents. When a girl in Nanjing, China, mustered the courage to tell her family about her sexual assault, she longed for help and comfort from her parents, but their first reaction was to question and criticize herself. Some parents will think that this is a scandal that should not be known to others and want to cover it up and push their children into a lonely situation. We need to change. We need to give our children unconditional trust and support, not suspicion, when they call for help. We should offer comfort and help, not blame.
