1.10.1 KIPP meeting 3

I refrained from discussing my own project during my second KIPP group meeting (as I had taken up a large amount of time during the first one), but my third meeting was much more fruitful. I explained that my project idea has become broader, with a focus on the implications of AI’s advent occurring within a capitalist system. My group undertook thought-provoking discussions on this topic and provided some helpful tips and pieces of feedback, which are summarised below.

1.10 Reflect on how reading and commenting on other students’ blogs has helped you to formulate and refine your own project topic

Engaging with and providing feedback on my peers’ blogs has not only validated my own progress but has also spurred me on in actively seeking out areas for improvement. Below, I share more insights specific to my week 10 group.

1.9 How has your learning, and/or feedback influenced your thinking about the direction your project is taking? How are you integrating the literature into the plan?

In embarking on my research journey, I have received valuable feedback and engaged with relevant literature as part of my learning. Here, I outline the key insights gained from each of these elements during my programme.

1.5.1 KIPP meeting 1

This week I attended the first KIPP group meeting. Questions from peers helped me to identify some thoughts on my project which were left out of my week 5 blog post. Crucially, I didn’t explain that my proposal (to be in favour of a 98% corporation tax on AI companies) would include the notion that newly generated tax revenue would be used to offset the cost of AI in some way. My initial idea was that the newly unemployed could claim financial support, whether that be directly, through a specific ‘AI unemployment fund’, or indirectly, i.e. more cash to put towards the benefits system.

1.3 Reflect on the programme core course and its relevance to the development of your project idea

I gained a small amount of experience working with law during my time in financial services, but I have never formally studied it. My programme’s core course, Data and AI Ethics, Law, and Governance, was my first exposure to law within an academic environment. I was pleasantly surprised; I had imagined law to be rather a tedious discipline, but I quickly saw we would not be memorising long, dry legal texts. During the course intensive, I really enjoyed thinking about how legislation can be interpreted in different ways.

1.2 Developing a project idea

Whilst I have some academic experience in philosophy and ethics, I admit that the world of modern technology is somewhat of a mystery to me. I expect the digital knowledge I’ll gain over the next few weeks will help establish the focus of my final project, which I’ll define in due course. For now, I’m just brainstorming.

1.1 What do you hope to get from the programme?

Like many of us, I am deeply concerned about some aspects of AI and big data, and unfortunately I do believe that this developing technology will cause us huge difficulty in the coming years.

However, as a member of the global ecosystem, I consider it my, our responsibility to make every effort to steer the use of AI and big data in a positive direction, even if our efforts fail.
