2.1 In preparation for the meeting with your individual supervisor, refine the rationale for and scope and format of your project on the basis of any reading or thinking done over the break

During the break, I continued reading key primary sources on economic ideologies and systems in chronological order. I am currently making my way through the following texts:

Capitalism:

  • 16th Century – Mercantilism and Early Capitalist Thought: The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith (1776)
  • 18th Century – Enlightenment Era: Two Treatises of Government by John Locke (1689)
  • Late 18th to 19th Century – Industrial Revolution: Principles of Political Economy by David Ricardo (1817)
  • Late 19th Century – Austrian School of Economics: Principles of Economics by Carl Menger (1871)
  • 20th Century – Neoliberalism and Chicago School: Capitalism and Freedom by Milton Friedman (1962)

Socialism:

  • Early 19th Century – Utopian Socialism: New Christianity by Robert Owen (1817)
  • Mid-19th Century – Marxist Socialism: Das Kapital by Karl Marx (Volume 1 published in 1867)
  • Late 19th Century – Revisionist Socialism: Evolutionary Socialism by Eduard Bernstein (1899)
  • 20th Century – Democratic Socialism: The Future of Socialism by Anthony Crosland (1956)

I won’t be moving on to applying this knowledge specifically to AI and data until I have attended my first supervision meeting. The rationale for, scope and proposed format of my project therefore hasn’t changed from my last blog post of semester 1.

I therefore intend to ask my supervisor generally for their opinion on my project’s scope. I have concerns that my topic is too broad, but I hope that the creative output format will allow for flexibility in addressing this issue. Generally, I hope to gain an understanding from my supervisor of how feasible my project idea is and of any changes I need to make to the idea in order to meet the EFI’s expectations.
