Graduate/Postgraduate Production Participation Update

On the afternoon of the 19th of February, I received a message from Sara Ni Eithir offering a DIT role on her graduate project Waiting for Marcus. I remember watching the pitch for the film and I found the topic quite interesting as it takes a retrospective on childhood relationships.  At first, when I was offered the role I was confused, what is this DIT role on set?

I started doing research on the role of the DIT.

Research for the role 

DIT – digital imaging technician.

In the era of digital images, this role in production could not not exist. The main responsibility of the digital imaging technician is to secure material made during production, thus transferring it to hard drives to free up memory on SD cards. The DIT also checks whether the data is accessible and stored correctly – creates and organizes folders for files. One of the responsibilities also includes creating backups on multiple hard drives to fully avoid file loss.

To prepare for the role, the subreddit r/FilmDIT helped to understand my role better.

Before the shooting of Waiting for Marcus, I additionally discussed with Sara my responsibilities. She explained to me that I would just need to create folders on the hard drive and copy the files.

In conclusion, the DIT is the safeguard of the material the rest of the production worked hard on (in order for the filmed material not to disappear completely).
