Week 3
Graduate/Postgraduate Production Participation Update
This week I emailed Sara Ni Eithir on the role of a runner on her film Waiting for Marcus.
Felicity replied to me in an email and we continued our conversation regarding roles.
Masterclass Takeaway
Lindsay Watson’s masterclass on editing was important to understanding the role of an editor. The editor is responsible for transforming raw footage into a coherent product, as well as going through the material and picking worthy material. First, the editor begins with assembling the material and after being overlooked makes more cuts to the final project. The editor collaborates with various departments that might need to contribute to the final projects, such as the director, colour grader, VFX artist, and producer.
Nowadays, the attention span of an average person is eight seconds, when in 2000 it was 12 seconds; thus with time, it got smaller and smaller. To keep the viewers engaged editors must account for this as well and keep a shot no longer than eight seconds, which would be mostly used for commercial purposes.
The editor’s role is important in delivering the sequence of the story and the idea the director wants to express. This highly influences the audience’s perception of the product through engagement and storytelling.
