Week 2

Graduate/Postgraduate Production Participation Update

The second week of the semester began with a discovery of PG students’ projects. During the seminar, Tracey informed me that postgraduate students were looking to fill in roles in their productions. Tracey also mentioned that a director was searching to collaborate with a Ukrainian student, which I found exciting. However, we could not find out which one! This remained a mystery.

When I looked over the pitches for the postgraduate projects I found them even more interesting as they are working on documentaries. In the future (and now) I am looking to work on documentaries and investigations. This is my area of interest as my mother is a journalist-investigator and previously made some major documentaries back in Ukraine, which I always found fascinating and interesting. As a person coming from war-torn Ukraine, I am willing to make visual documentaries and journalistic investigations to expose Ukraine from different perspectives, both positive and corrupt. I believe this is a chance to get experience in documentary making.

Documentaries represent either a reflection of a real situation or closer to real life. I have reached out to Ling Lee, to get more information regarding the collaboration a

I emailed Lilette Burga Tuesta regarding her documentary.

Along with this, I started a conversation with Felicity regarding participation in her project. She informed me that she is almost set on the roles for her project and asked me to provide portfolio with my works.

Masterclass Takeaway

Louis Paxton’s masterclass on being a director and a scriptwriter on a budget was quite an interesting talk. He explained the ups and downs of working with a small crew.

One of the most interesting parts about his talk was mentioning the difference of work in London and Edinburgh. He explained that from his experience finding work in Edinburgh was surprisingly easier than in London.

A scriptwriter is a person who is responsible for the idea and meaning of a film. The director guides this idea through the production stages.

Paxton’s short Neville is Dead is quite an interesting work. This made me think that the short must not necessarily be something complicated philosophically, but rather open and understandable to everyone, yet fascinating. The idea of the film was simple yet worked brilliantly. I enjoyed watching it and apart from that I would break down the film as an academic example even if it was not intended as one) because of the way it was constructed. The script is explores uses the theory where the character enters the story in one way and finishes it the opposite. The cinematography is pleasurable. The film is very neat and clean, and I got the impression as if it was followed by some sort of a book guide. This only means that it was followed by certain rules and dedication which made the film work.

Being attentive to small details and building up your experience is essential when. Being constructive and having a script is important when creating a piece of artistic work.
