Reflect on how reading and commenting on other students’ blogs has helped you to formulate and refine your own project topic.

Reading & commenting on peer blogs has helped me with my project topic, especially in reflecting my priorities in creating my project onto considerations of others. In meetings, we discussed Tom Aindow’s project, and in my feedback to him, I spoke about how he should draw on his unique positioning having worked a lot in programming, perhaps through creating a ‘ethical guide book’ to platforms and plug-ins for developers. It made me relate my positioning to my project – I have always been invested in the intersection between technology, creativity, and people, and in breaking down complex concepts for my own understanding, as well as aiding the understanding of others. My information systems undergrad taught me about bridging the gap between two different kinds of people – developers, and system owners. I want to draw on these experiences in ‘translating’ concepts. I had always tried to make use of simple examples, pictures, diagrams, and flowcharts. Reflecting on my own advice (to Tom), I want to draw on these skills in creating my boardgames, with a new challenge of simplification to a level of children’s understanding.

On Luis’s blog, I suggested in the comments of his Week 5 blog that he complement his proposed topic of systemic biases present in oncology diagnosis algorithms with ‘real-world’ stories, to really drive the impactfulness of his research. Relating this to my own research, I am considering how I could drive the importance of children understanding their data rights home – perhaps through interviewing parents on when their child’s data has been shared in a way that has negatively impacted them. Alongside this advice, I was impressed by the organisation of his blog and thoughts – an attribute that has definitely inspired me going forward. I have treated my blogs as more of a stream of thoughts and reflection rather than a more organised approach, but going forward, I hope to bring some of Luis’s structure into my own blogs.

From reading Hanyao’s blog, I can see our areas of interest for the project are similar – she is also investigating AI ethics in K-12 education systems. Her blogposts made me realise that perhaps my board game needed to take a more holistic approach to education, through creating some kind of lesson plan or teacher’s toolkit for using the board game in their class. I think that would also allow some room for including concepts that may be too difficult to translate into a ‘gambe-able’ format, or those which are too complex to be presented one-dimensionally.

    Dear Savannah, I am happy to hear that my blogs dealt as a source of inspiration, accelerating your train of thought! On your idea to interview parents; how do you plan to approach this undertaking? Alternatively, I could imagine that using anonymised surveys could bring a lot to the table for you, as they are easier to distribute and less time-intensive for both parties.
