‘who’s left?’
In the process of creating this artwork, I found myself immersed in the simultaneous endeavour of crafting a full-body sculpture that was the natural progression from my previous project titled ‘What for?’ The profound impact of the theme I explored in that project, coupled with the insightful feedback I received during its exhibition, served as a catalyst for me to delve even deeper into the subject matter. This time, I aimed to weave in my newly acquired skills in portraiture, which had become a focal point of my artistic development.
My intention with this new sculpture was to portray a young girl who embodies a poignant sense of loss and vulnerability, symbolized by her dragging a Palestinian flag. This imagery was not only a representation of her personal struggle but also a broader commentary on the socio-political landscape. However, the challenge of sculpting her body was particularly difficult due to her top-heavy design, a flaw I learn during my ‘Congruity & Incongruity’ piece back in 2022. To address this, I ingeniously utilized the flag as a supportive element, allowing me to position her upright with her head held high, conveying a sense of resilience despite her circumstances.
Despite the ambitious nature of this sculpture and my recent developments into portraiture, I found that capturing her facial expression was a formidable challenge. Each attempt brought me closer, yet I struggled to encapsulate the precise emotion I envisioned. After several iterations and much contemplation, I finally achieved the expression that resonated with the essence of the piece, a moment of triumph that underscored the importance of perseverance in the creative process.
Reflecting on this project and the many difficulties I encountered, I recognize that I gained invaluable insights that will undoubtedly inform my future work. I developed a keener understanding of measuring and comparing facial features, grasping the nuances of proportions, and mastering the dynamics of hair flow. Engaging with aspects of art that I had previously shied away from was both exhilarating and enlightening, pushing me beyond my comfort zone and expanding my artistic repertoire.
With this newfound passion and knowledge, I am filled with anticipation as I look toward future projects. I feel a renewed sense of confidence and a willingness to embrace challenges with less hesitation. This journey has not only enriched my skills but has also deepened my connection to the themes I wish to explore, allowing me to approach my art with a more profound sense of purpose and clarity.
