Week4

In the week 4 of the 4A course,

I made the material collage about the main space

to further express the atmosphere I wanted to design.

I was very torn about the choice of materials,

but Brian and Ed. both mentioned that materials have a big impact on the expression of my space,

so I did some research on materials.

At first I envisioned marble as the flooring material for the main space,

but tutor’s rhetorical question sent me into a reflective mood.

“What kind of space in your mind would choose to have marble on the floor?

Is it luxurious or rustic?”

I answered luxurious.

“Is your space a luxurious space?”

I answered no,

because the theme of my project is a recycling center for used clothes,

a “factory” related to sustainability,

not a luxury space.

Marble: as a unique interior decorative effect and very high-grade,

hard material, long service life,

is a non-renewable resource.

But the high cost, large area use will lead to higher decoration budget.

Vinyl: Vinyl is very tough and durable, waterproof,

and resistant to scratches stains and abrasions making cleaning easy.

The price is much cheaper compared to other materials,

low cost and easy to install.

In contrast, vinyl was a much better choice of flooring material for my project.

Its great to see you reflect on design tutorials as well as take on board feedback from tutors. Continue to develop your material choices to suit your brief.
For your internal frosted glass I would also look at potentially using polycarbonate instead for your transparent material. It could suit the industrial atmosphere of the building more. Look at an example of Atelier Industrial office warehouse in Argentina, they have an office structure with transparent material (using polycarbonate) on the mezzanine floor.
