“This guy sits in his shed everyday and makes these wooden sculptures – this is something he started doing when he was in prison.

“He makes sculptures from found pieces of wood – these pieces of wood need to speak to him before he can work on it.

“He thinks it is wonderful that there’s an audience, but it doesn’t make any difference to his production.”

Jonathan Lohn

“I am Jonathan Lohn. I have Bipolar 1 Atypical. I have a deep personal commitment to expose the beating heart of psychotic experience through different art forms and fight back against the cliches and charlatans.”

“I have a deep personal commitment to reveal the perceptual glory of psychotic experience! I match the fabric of media to to that of time and space altered by true psychotic episodes.. I seek to combat the charlatanism of Dada and Surrealism, which lay claim to psychosis in the popular imagination. I am engaged with a number of mental health groups in building a community and identity for mentally ill people through art.

I want people to truly understand psychosis – both sufferers and the general population. I want everyone to enjoy the or be challenged by the art, the paradoxes and flip sides that comes from it.”

George Harding
George’s self-portraits challenge perceptions about mental health. Drawing from his own journey with mental illness, and those of friends and family, he finds inspiration from impressionist painters – using techniques of blurring and fragmenting to portray emotion and disassociation from reality.

“She is the sort of infantile self at the heart of psychosis,” Ottley says. “When you are in that state the other doesn’t exist. The world has become so warped and you’re trying to navigate your way in it.”

Adrian Ghenie

Adrian Ghenie surveys and subverts historical and artistic narratives through his paintings, which aim to unearth feelings of vulnerability, frustration, or desire, and often draw on human experience and ideas of the collective unconscious.

Cy twombli

Perhaps the most important continuity that Mr. Twombly cultivated was that between artwork and viewer. His art revealed an enthralling calligraphic and diagrammatic universe teeming with meaning. His ultimate subject was nothing less than the human longing to communicate — to make meaning that others could apprehend and expand. It is an ancient loop, but in nearly everything he did Mr. Twombly exposed its wiring with a new clarity and exultant intensity. Few 20th-century artists corroborated as insistently Schiller’s assertion that “all art is dedicated to joy.”

Clare Woods

Much of Woods’ recent work is concerned with fragility, vulnerability, mortality and disability; the delicate border that exists between sickness and health, cruelty and humanity, and ultimately life and death. Perhaps this explains why bodies come to mind even when the images are not directly about them. Despite the varying degrees of brightly coloured abstraction and compositional distortions, Woods’ anthropomorphic studies bring to mind heads, limbs and torsos. It is like seeing the body through a distorted lens, defamiliarising and estranging it.
