Embodied experience of pregnancy (provisional title)
Introduction:
A brief introduction to the topic of embodied experience of pregnancy and the construction of the pregnant body.
Theoretical framework:
Discuss the dramaturgical body framework, which sees the body as a performance and emphasises the actions involved in experiencing the body. The role of social interactions in shaping the meaning and process of embodying pregnancy as a performance involving learning, adapting, and performing the role of being pregnant is described by Neiterman (2013).
Body image and perception:
A qualitative study in Malta by Galea & Spiteri (2022) examined the impact of body image on pregnant women, including body distortion, social commentary, and media depictions.
Somatic and social experiences:
Highlighting the interplay between somatic and social experiences of pregnancy, considering both embodied physical experiences and social perceptions of the pregnant body. Neiterman (2013) discusses how medicalized notions of pregnancy shape women’s experiences of the transition to motherhood and play a role in the construction of their identities as mothers. An Australian study of how pregnant women made important therapeutic distinctions between CAM (complementary and alternative medicine) practice and biomedicine. what they considered appropriate to consume (Meurk, 2014).
Social context and interactions
To analyse the role of social context and interactions in facilitating the process of embodiment of pregnancy, considering pregnancy as a social and cultural transition. The experiences of pregnancy, the reactions of others to their pregnancies, and the ways in which they adjusted their behaviour to pregnancy were not the same. The social contexts in which these women experienced their pregnancies and the meanings they attached to their transitions to motherhood. (Neiterman 2012).
