Research Data Backups

Many of the Institute and commodity servers have local partitions that are sometimes used to store data. These partitions are usually called /disk/data or /disk/scratch.

In total, there is more than 7Tb of data on such disks! These locations are primarily intended for temporary data or data that can easily be regenerated. We are, however, aware that some data in these locations is not of a temporary nature. By default, the data in these locations is not backed up and therefore, any data that you save here is at risk unless you make specific backup arrangements. It is important, therefore, that you give consideration to the need for backing up the data stored on local partitions. You can either arrange your own backups or you can contact Support to discuss the option to have the data backed up by the School for which there may be a cost.
