AT June 29th 2024 Power Down – Systems Unit

As you may have heard, on Saturday 29 June there will be no electricity in Appleton Tower. That’ll mean a weekend shutdown for some servers and services which are run by the Informatics Systems Unit. The affected services will be down for the entire weekend and will be brought back on Monday 1st July. They include:

The ssh servers

All of the ssh servers will be down: student.ssh.inf.ed.ac.uk (aka ssh.inf.ed.ac.uk), remote.ssh.inf.ed.ac.uk, and staff.ssh.inf.ed.ac.uk.
For that weekend only, there will be alternative ssh services:

tmp.ssh.inf.ed.ac.uk will replace student.ssh.inf.ed.ac.uk
tmpremote.ssh.inf.ed.ac.uk will replace remote.ssh.inf.ed.ac.uk. This one will be usable without a VPN, and it’ll be accessible to the same people who can currently use remote.ssh.inf.ed.ac.uk.

DICE remote desktop

The DICE remote desktop service (at username.remote.inf.ed.ac.uk) is served by several servers. Half of them will be down, so you have a 50% chance of being affected. If you are, you can open a remote desktop session on one of these other hosts instead: ifrdp1.remote.inf.ed.ac.uk, ifrdp2.remote.inf.ed.ac.uk, ifrdp3.remote.inf.ed.ac.uk. staff.xrdp.inf.ed.ac.uk and staff.login.inf.ed.ac.uk will also be down.

OpenVPN

The AT endpoints of the OpenVPN service will be down, but you will still be able to use the equivalent Forum endpoints (Informatics-EdLAN-Forum and so on).
