Various services run by the Informatics Services Unit will be affected by the Appleton Tower power down of Saturday 29th June 2024. It is likely services won’t be restored until the morning of Monday 1st of July. The complete list of services is listed below.

AFS

The following AFS file servers will be shutdown. This means any AFS file space served by these servers will be unavailable, this includes many student home directories, some staff home directories, and group space. Note that the lack of group space is also likely to affect some web space served from those group areas.

The affected servers are: kirk, pike and peppercorn.

To find out if your home directory, or particular bit of AFS space, is on one of the above servers, use the command “fs whereis <path>”, if the output mentions one of the above servers, then it will be unavailable during the powerdown, eg

> fs whereis ~neilb
File /afs/inf.ed.ac.uk/user/n/neilb is on host pike.inf.ed.ac.uk

> fs whereis /afs/inf.ed.ac.uk/group/web/touchscreens/
File /afs/inf.ed.ac.uk/group/web/touchscreens/ is on host gooch.inf.ed.ac.uk

So in the above examples, my home directory will be unavailable, but the “touchscreens” group space will be available.

We have some capacity to move some users or group space to servers in the Forum, but not everything. If you really need for your home directory or some group space to be available for the duration of the AT power down, then please submit a support ticket before 20th June 2024.

One of our main web servers (groups.inf) will be inaccessible, as well as some individual web servers.
