This Fridays professional practice talk will be given by the one and only illustrator, print maker and inspiring ECA Programme Director, Jonathan Gibbs. We look forward to hearing about the challenges and successes of his established career, in particular new works produced during his recent sabbatical.
Educated at the Central School of Art and the Slade, Jonathan works in wood engraving, drawing and painting. Alongside teaching in the Illustration Department, he regularly exhibits in Edinburgh and London.
Students and staff enjoyed a selection of Jonathan’s prints earlier in the week at the opening of his latest exhibition in the Edinburgh College of Art Sculpture Court. On the evening Jonathan extended the theme of rivers from his work to the entertainment, playing a selection of river themed music on the guitar, accompanied by his son Thomas Gibbs on the clarinet.
We look forward learning the journey behind his latest work this Friday.

This afternoon our excited students will be having a talk from cartoonist, illustrator, designer and author John Fardell. John Fardell is the author of three children’s novels, including The Seven Professors of the Far Northand The Secret of the Black Moon Moth. A regular contributor to Viz (he is the creator of The Modern Parents and The Criticsamongst others), his work has appeared in the Independent, the Evening Standard, the New Statesman, the Glasgow Herald and the List. We are looking forward to learning from his experience in the world of illustration.
We are pleased to welcome Simon and Angie Lewin as part of our Professional Practice Lecture Series, this Friday at 2.30pm.
Angie and Simon run St. Jude’s Gallery as well as producing limited print runs of beautiful wallpapers and furnishing fabrics. Angie herself is a talented printmaker, painter and designer.
Join us and learn something!
Last Friday our department welcomed a group of pupils, teachers, parents and grandparents from Towerbank Primary School. The children from Portobello had been working with our Second Year students and the author Vivian French to create a picture book about a sea monster.
Our students incorporated the children’s drawings into a large book, as well as creating little sea monster books of their own, both of which they presented to the pupils on Friday.
It was fun to have visitors in our department, a big thank you to everyone involved!
Our 2nd year students had a great morning drawing on Calton Hill yesterday, under the guidance of artist Catharine Davidson. Luckily the weather played along and the day was dry, sunny, mild and not windy – a rare occasion as any Edinburgh resident will tell you – and resulted in a great variety of observational drawings.
Next Wednesday they will scale Blackford Hill! Fingers crossed that the weather stays nice.
If you find yourself all dressed up and with nowhere to go, why not stop by the Filmhouse Bar on Lothian Road to catch “Portraits of Italian Cinema”, a collaboration between the Italian Institute and ECA’s Illustration course. 22 of our students and 6 Italian artists living in Edinburgh produced a selection of portraits of the greatest stars of Italian cinema, including directors, actors and actresses such as Federico Fellini, Sophia Loren, Claudia Cardinale and Toto. A winner will be chosen soon and receive a six month pass for the Filmhouse!
The finished posters look fantastic so go and have a look – the exhibition is running until the 22nd of March.
Last week some of our students had the opportunity to display work at an evening event at Morton Fraser Solicitors. Morton Fraser’s offices are located in Edinburgh’s Quartermile, with stunning views across the city. Our students had a great time talking about their work to the guests of the event and we look forward to the possibility of more collaborations of this kind.
Have a look at the work of those who took part: Ailsa Johnson, Celeste Woodham Clark, Drew Walker, Laura Griffin, Mhairi Braden, Ellie Walker, Peony Gent, George Douglas, Hanna Frelek, Laura Darling, and Stella Phipps.
