Today’s Film: Scrooge

It wouldn’t be Christmas without mentioning one of the most famous Christmas stories of them all, A Christmas Carol. There have been more adaptations of this novella than you can count and each brings something new and interesting to the tale. The same is true for 1970’s Scrooge with Albert Finney in the titular role. A musical version of Dickens’ story, the familiar plot is enhanced by excellent and catchy songs which underpin the emotions of critical scenes. From the heartbreaking soul of You…You during his interactions with his fiancee to the joyous delight of December the 25th each song adds further weight to the emotions and lessons throughout the film. This is, undoubtedly, a campier version of A Christmas Carol, but you won’t be disappointed and the classic ending will leave you with a smile on your face and Thank You Very Much firmly stuck in your head.
Today’s Tradition: Christmas Markets, Worldwide
Christmas markets have a history that spans over 600 years, originating in the Middle Ages as practical winter fairs where villagers gathered to buy essential supplies before the harsh winter months. The first known Christmas market, Dresden’s Striezelmarkt, was held in 1434, and it has evolved into a vibrant celebration of the holiday season.
The River Thames frost fairs were held historically on the frozen ice of the river Thames with the last being in 1814. These were held regularly from as early in the 7th century and it is these winter celebrations that helped inspire Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol.
