We are once again at the start of a new academic year and for many of you that means you are starting a new course, in a new place.
This is a very exciting time but it can be very overwhelming and it may take some time to find your feet. To help you settle in we asked current and previous students what they wish they had known when they started their course. Hopefully, these nuggets of wisdom will help as you start this exciting new time in your lives.
Weather
- “Buy a good waterproof coat with a hood and good shoes. It rains a lot here and it is too windy for an umbrella.”
- “Scottish weather can be changeable so it is best to be prepared. Even if the sun is shining when you leave in the morning, take your coat because there could be a downpour before lunch!”
- “The winter is dark and cold and may be difficult if you aren’t used to it. Vitamin D supplements are really useful.”
Health & Wellbeing
- “If you need help, don’t be afraid to ask. GPs can help with health issues, Wellbeing and Advisers can help with stress and mental health. There are lots of people who can help if you need it.”
- “Don’t make your studies your whole life. A good balance is essential.”
- “Lots of shops have student discounts to make grocery shopping and healthy eating easier. Find the best ones and take advantage of them.”
- “Make sure you register with your doctor (GP) as soon as you can. Don’t wait until you get ill and don’t try and tough it through an illness. The doctors are great and there is no charge.”
Studies
- “If you are starting your PhD, enjoy your 1st year while you can! You get much busier in your 2nd year and onward so make sure you take time to have fun in your 1st year.”
- “There are loads of academic and career focused events happening which are so useful. Academics hold extra workshops on their research and the careers team hold sessions about job hunting and CV building. They have been so helpful.”
- “Make the most of the study spaces available. If you have an office, it is a great place to work and focus. There are also lots of study spaces in the school and the wider university.”
Social Life
- “Try everything! There are so many interesting new foods and activities. Edinburgh is an amazing city with so many great restaurants, lots of history, and culture. Jump in and try as many things as you can.”
- “Everyone is probably as shy and nervous of meeting new people as you are. Don’t let it stop you from talking to people.”
- “Go along to events, even if you’re shy. You’ll be surprised how much fun you will have. Everybody is so welcoming and you will find some wonderful friends.”
- “Don’t worry too much about correct grammar and vocabulary if English is a second language. Everyone is very friendly, helpful, and excited to meet you.”
