New(s) to the Library : More digital newspaper archives

I’m pleased to let you know that following successful trials, the Library has been able to purchase two new digital newspaper archives. Expanding our already extensive collection of digital newspaper archives from the UK and around the world.

The Sunday Times Historical Archive, 1822-2021

Boasting some 3.5 million articles and more than 800,000 digitized pages, The Sunday Times Historical Archive is a gateway to the greatest crimes, careers, and culture of the last two centuries. This archive is an important resource for the humanities and social sciences, especially in history, media studies, journalism, literature, cultural studies, politics, and theater. The collection is also a valuable resource for family history and genealogy.

ProQuest Historical Newspapers: The Scotsman (extension module, 1950-2002)

While we’ve had access to The Scotsman archive for over 15 years, until earlier this year, the digital archive only covered the years 1817-1950. But an extension module covering the years 1950-2002 has now been released and the Library has been able to purchase this to ensure we have access to the complete archive* of our local newspaper. It includes the complete paper, cover-to-cover, with full-page and article images in easily downloadable PDF format.
*As currently available.

Both of these digital archives can be accessed via the Newspapers, Magazines and Other News Sources guide, the Newspapers & Magazines A-Z list, or DiscoverEd.

In other newspaper related news, the Library also now has access to PressReader until 31 July 2026 on a trial basis. It provides interactive, digital access to nearly 3,000 of the world’s best newspapers. PressReader offers readers an intuitive and user-friendly way to read newspapers from around the world, including publications from Europe, Latin America, Asia, the Middle East, Canada, and The U.S. Note this is a newspaper-only trial, magazines are not included.

PressReader can be accessed via the Newspapers, Magazines and Other News Sources guide, the Newspapers & Magazines A-Z list, or DiscoverEd.

Access to all resources mentioned is only available to current students and staff at the University of Edinburgh.
