About

Based at History of Art at Edinburgh College of Art (ECA), the Global Contemporary Research Group takes a broad lens on issues and debates that comprise the contemporary in art, theory, and curating. The group formed in 2016-17 to examine the ‘big picture’ of the art world in the twenty-first century, which opened with an emphasis on globalisation and is now unfolding as a tapestry of interconnected crises. Looking into the histories of modernity in relation to what exists now and what barely appears on the horizon, the Global Contemporary brings into conversation the diverse research strands of its membership while aiming also to be a platform for events that foster dialogue, critique, and engagement among students, staff, and the public.
