The GENEXIT Study

Long title: A Qualitative Study of Millennial and Gen Z Nurse Turnover in the UK

WHAT IS THE GENEXIT STUDY

This study is a PhD research project that is seeking to understand the factors that cause individuals from Millennial/Generation Y (born 1981-96) and Generation Z (born 1997-2012) to leave the nursing (RN) profession, in the UK.

 

WHY IS THIS STUDY IMPORTANT

Approximately 20% of nurses leaving the profession from the youngest generations of working adults. It is important to understand the factors causing Gen Y and Z to leave the nursing profession, to inform future recruitment and retention practice of health organisations.

 

WHO IS THE RESEARCHER

The principal researcher is Kirsty Douglas, who is currently undertaking a PhD in Nursing Studies at The University of Edinburgh, Scotland.  She is a Millennial, who qualified as a nurse in the UK, and has work experience in the NHS in both Scotland and England, as well as in public health advocacy advocacy in the EU.

 

HOW AND WHEN WILL THIS RESEARCH BE UNDERTAKEN

This research invites participants from Millennials and Gen Z who have chosen to leave nursing to have a online interview of up to 1 hour (60 minutes), and share their nursing journey experience including expectations, training, work, and decision-making process to leave.

Recruitment for this study is currently being carried in 2025.
