With the launch of this new blog, and as we move closer to the half-way point of this project, we’re reflecting on our Spring 2023 meeting that kick-started this ambitious project.

The G2C research project aims to understand the feasibility of capturing waste heat source, such as from data centres, and redirecting it towards homes using the abandoned mine workings below Edinburgh. The project involves many international academic and industrial partners, working together on this innovative concept.

The 3-day Spring event included various presentations, discussions and workshops on the feasibility study currently underway, and discussed the next steps to progress the project. We also took a field trip to the study area and old collieries whose mine workings will be used to transfer the heat.

The event was a fantastic opportunity for the consortium to share their insights on the development of G2C and promote effective collaboration. We look forward to G2C growing and we will be sharing our journey to building Scotland’s first large-scale geo-battery with you.
