The 65th Session of the 'Société internationale Fernand de Visscher pour l'Histoire des Droits de l'Antiquité' (SIHDA) was held in Liege, from 19 – 24 September 2011. The general theme of the congress was: "The Obligation in the Laws of Antiquity, from its source to its fulfilment".
It is the premier annual conference on Roman law which provides attendees with the opportunity to listen to papers by distinguished scholars in the field. On the whole, the standard of papers was exceptionally high, especially in the plenary sessions at the start and the conclusion of the conference where the latest research on contract and delict were presented.
The conference concluded on Friday 23 September with an AGM at which the next host, Professor Boudewijn Sirks of Oxford University, announced the theme of the 66th session of this conference "the reception of Roman law". Professor Sirks also took the opportunity to deliver a touching tribute to Alan Rodger.
The conference was expertly organised by Professor Jean-François Gerkens and his assistants. The author of this blog congratulates them on a job well done.
