REPORT BY MILES GLENDINNINGTO ISC/U+L MEMBERS, FEBRUARY 2011

(a) LANDSCAPE POLICY PROGRAMME

As promised in our report at Mexico, we have now proceeded with the plan to organise an initial day conference in spring 2011 to clarify the principal issues to be addressed in Jan Haenraets's review of MoMo landscape conservation (building on the work in his PhD thesis). Jan and Melissa Hollingsworth are now at an advanced stage of preparation of this event, to be held at ECA on 21 April.  The intention is to publish the proceedings on-line afterwards as a DOCOMOMO E-Proceedings, to make them widely available.  Several committee members, including Jan Haenraets, Andrew Saniga, Ola Uduku and Miles Glendinning, will participate in this event: to take advantage of this, an ISC/U+L committee meeting will be held at ECA the previous day.  A current draft schedule is attached for info.

(b) MASS HOUSING INVENTORY (BASIC LEVEL)

Work is underway, chiefly by ECA researcher Amy Hickman, to establish an U + L 'branch' web-page of the DOCOMOMO International website, together with a pilot copyright-free digital image library (beginning with historic 1970s/80s images of postwar mass housing), arranged by DOCOMOMO working group.  Trials for a possible formula using a WordPress blog are in progress, and we will hopefully have some material ready in time for the April U+L committee meeting.

(c)  MASS HOUSING INVENTORY (ENHANCED LEVEL)

The research programme into Hong Kong and Singapore mass housing is progressing further, with field visits to both locations planned for this month and for July 2011. A themed DOCOMOMO International conference at ECA, jointly with EAHN, focusing on mass housing in the former socialist bloc (and, again, with participation by U + L committee members) is planned for September 2011: further details tbc.

(d)  NEW DOCOMOMO WORKING PARTIES

The plan for a DOCOMOMO-Jiangnan regional group in mainland China has reached an advanced stage of preparation but has been delayed recently, as the principal organiser will be away from work until at least March.  Progress with the Hong Kong group has just moved into a higher gear, with a view to securing full membership at the Helsinki 2012 conference; a provisional working group meeting was held at Hong Kong University on February 14th.
