Reflection and Process | Plastic Flowers

What do Lilies Symbolize?

Plastic Lilies

On Friday, March 21st and Friday, March 28th, our Process group crafted a beautiful sculpture of lungs and flowers with lights. I got to help create the plastic lilies with plastic water bottles and hot glue.

Process:
  • I cut oval shapes in the water bottles and bent/shaped the oval shapes into petal shapes with a candle flame. During this process, I had a wonderful time creating petals that felt natural and as though they were moving in the wind. Capturing the movement of lilies as a form of breath.

A. Depiction of oval plastic petal – with a curve melted on the petal to mimic movement in the flower.

B. We used candles to melt the plastic.

C. Example of a completed flower petal.

D. Glued 6 petals together to create the structure of a Lily.

Symbolism:
  • In various cultures, especially the western culture, Lilies represent forgiveness. Floral design is one of my most passionate hobbies, and in my journey as a florist, I have learned the symbolism behind many flowers.
  • Oftentimes, in spiritual practices, faiths and organizations, forgiveness is shared as a value that leads to peace and healing. For me, the symbolism behind the Lily and our use of it in this presentation holds a very special and powerful connection to the Process of breath.
How does this tie into our installation?:
  • Through the process of forgiveness, we learn to let go. Not just emotionally or mentally. We learn to let go in the body. My education background is in Psychology and Substance Abuse Treatment and Prevention. During my undergraduate education I took courses in Trauma Psychology. One important concept and truth I learned, was that the body hold’s onto Trauma, Resentment and Pain. Often-times through the healing process, people must learn to work in the body to release trauma because the body internalizes pain, which later results into higher levels of cortisol. Ultimately manifesting into of anxiety, depression, chronic pain and illnesses.  Meditation and Mindfulness has been used as a powerful therapeutic tool to help treat the body.
  • As forgiveness is a powerful step of letting go, this process spiritually, psychologically and physically relates to the process of inhaling and exhaling in meditation.

Storyboard Design for Documenting the Installation Exhibition

Screenshot

This week, I developed a detailed storyboard for the documentary recording of the installation exhibition. To effectively capture the interaction between the audience and the installation, I primarily employed medium close-up shots at eye level. This perspective not only highlights the audience’s natural reactions but also enhances the immersive experience, allowing viewers to engage more deeply with the footage.

The storyboard incorporates a shot/reverse shot technique to emphasize the dynamic interaction between the audience and the installation. On one hand, the shots document how viewers gradually synchronize their breathing with the installation’s background music (BGM) and visual cues, achieving a steady rhythm. On the other hand, they capture the way in which the installation visually responds to the audience’s breathing patterns, demonstrating the reciprocal influence between the two and reinforcing the sense of interactivity.

A major challenge in the filming process is the inability to implement additional lighting adjustments within the exhibition space. This limitation poses constraints on the visual quality and atmospheric composition of the footage. To address this issue, I have referenced relevant visual works and artistic styles to identify optimal approaches for utilizing natural light. By making full use of the available ambient lighting in the exhibition space and employing strategic composition, camera movement, and color grading, I aim to compensate for the lack of artificial lighting while maintaining the intended visual and narrative impact.

This storyboard design not only focuses on the artistic expressiveness of the installation but also seeks to enhance the immersive experience through audiovisual storytelling. The goal is to accurately capture the interactive atmosphere of the exhibition and effectively convey it through the documentary.

Material Requirements List

This is our installation material requirements list, including categories, descriptions, and prices. We have also embedded links.

We are planning to purchase materials for our installation online, such as resin, a heat gun, and other supplies. I would like to confirm whether it is necessary to request a receipt for each purchase, or if an online order confirmation would be sufficient.

Material Requirements List

For the lung component, we plan to use a hand-moldable resin that doesn’t require a mold, as molds are quite expensive. This resin can be shaped by hand and is also reusable. The cost is £6.5 per 100g, and based on ChatGPT’s calculation, we will need around 600g to create a lung-sized shell. So, we are tentatively planning to purchase six units. I’m not sure if we’ll need pigments, but I found some glitter options that we could consider if necessary.

For the plastic flowers, we will repurpose plastic bottles, which won’t require additional costs. However, we will need to purchase some tools to process them.

For lighting, I’ve looked into decorative light spheres and LED strips, which are quite affordable. The venue’s general lighting equipment can be borrowed via Book It.

Some advice for group

After looking at previous students’ work, I think we can learn a few things:
  • vlog record Introducing members (learning experience background/position/usual process record)
  • context Background meaning of the project (present the project concept/inspiration/impact in the film)
  • process echoing the theme (retaining the experience of the practical process / facing difficulties and challenges)
  • experimental video (documenting the interaction between the audience and the installation)

Summary:
  • Synchronize progress on output schedule (TD/MAX/ARDUNIO)
  • Add the post of vlog maker to record the progress of the team members and the process of project production.
  • Modularize the content to be submitted in submission1 and divide the work amongst the team members so that the collective wisdom of the team is reflected in the proposal.

These suggestions and basic ideas will be taken into account in the group discussion to determine whether they should be adopted or improved.
