What is Debating Marketing & Climate Change

Debating Marketing & Climate Change is an audio project where students create podcast episodes about the role of marketing and consumption in the context of the climate crisis. There are many (ir)responsible and (un)sustainable marketing and consumption  practices and problems that they choose from depending on what they feel passionate about.

Some topics covered on this podcast:

  • Am I a drop in the ocean? Do the actions and choices of an individual consumer matter?
  • What makes a good consumer – is it about their intentions or their impacts?
  • Who has greater power to positively impact on climate change: marketers or consumers?
  • Can marketing help reduce the barriers to environmentally sustainable consumption?
  • Can marketing practice help us achieve waste-free living?

In this first year of this project running, this resulted in some impressive episodes that were both highly engaging and informative!

Tune in to learn more about how marketing and consumption can change to positively impact the environment!

Who are we?

This podcast is organised by Dr Kristina Auxtova, Lecturer in Marketing, and Dr Pauline Ferguson, Senior Lecturer in Marketing at the University of Edinburgh Business School. The episodes are produced by our students as part of two courses: ‘Marketing & Climate Change’ (undergraduate honours) and ‘Marketing for Net Zero’ (postgraduate) – the top 3 get the opportunity to have their work featured here.
