What is a Magic Circle?

First coined by the Dutch historian Johann Huizinga (1955), the magic circle delineates the boundaries of the game from reality. Within it, unique rules apply that allow the game to take place.

LARP itself produces a ritually enacted space in which players are bound for the duration of the event.

Within these spaces, the rules apply; outside they do not. The magic circle, however, is a psychological space first and a physical space second.
