Live conservation on historic plaster cast collection, 12 July to 3 September 2010

Throughout the summer, the Cast Collection Conservation Workshop at the Edinburgh College of Art will be open to the public. At work there will be sculpture conservators from Graciela Ainsworth Sculpture Conservation, an Edinburgh based company currently working on the conservation of the fine Edinburgh Cast Collection. Three of the most significant casts will be on display: the Dying Gaul, a cast of a Roman marble copy of a Greek sculpture, the very interesting Smugglerius anatomical cast and the cast of the Dead Christ from Michelangelo’s famous Pieta.

The public will be able to look at photographs of these casts taken at different points during the conservation treatments. This will be a unique opportunity for the public to put any questions they might have about the conservation of the casts to the conservators who have been directly involved in this interesting project over the past year. The Conservation Workshop is adjacent to the Sculpture Court in the main building of the Edinburgh College of Art.

Talks by conservators will be held at the following times: 20 July to 3 September weekly onTuesdays 10.30-11.00am and Thursdays 2.30-3.00pm (families with children of all ages welcome). Talks by Graciela Ainsworth Sculpture Conservation
