The Edinburgh Cast Collection, displayed at the Edinburgh College of Art and the University of Edinburgh, is a historic collection of plaster casts of famous antique, medieval and renaissance statues and reliefs. The collection is one-of-a-kind and includes casts depicting characters and events from Greek and Roman history. Participate in creative sessions led by artists accompanied by presentations of the myths surrounding selected figures in our collection:

  • Storytelling – Greek/Roman myths and legends. Stories about some of the gods and goddesses depicted in our casts and the fantastic adventures of the heroes of mythology
  • Crafting – Learn how to create masks, shields and head dresses fit for a Greek or Roman god or goddess
  • Drawing – The Greeks and Romans were perfectionists, artists of the day always tried to portray the human figure as accurately as they could. Working with an artist, learn to draw some of the casts of well-known characters of the time and also how to create your own mythical characters.
  • Exploring – Some of our casts have pieces missing, working with an art historian who will tell you more about these characters, try to draw what you think they would have looked like when they were complete

Children’s Art Day is the UK-wide programme encouraging children, young people, families and teachers to engage with the visual arts. Events will take place across the UK between 12-18 July 2010.
