Today marks the last day of the 35th Deutscher Orientalistentag, which this year took place in Erlangen and was organised by the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. This yearly week-long conference brings together scholars from the German-speaking area and beyond to discuss their current research. I, postdoc Eline Scheerlinck, was kindly invited by Theresa Grabmaier (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München) to participate in the panel, organised by Theresa and entitled “Of Papyri, Parchment, and Milestones: Windows into Islamicate Societies through Documentary and Material Evidence.” The other participants in the panel were Kyle Longworth (Universiteit Leiden), Andreas Kaplony (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München), Eugenio Garosi (Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen), Rocio Daga Portillo (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München) and Eleonora Sonego. You can read the panel abstract as well as the abstracts of the individual presentations on the official website of the conference.
Unfortunately, I was not able to participate in person in the panel, but I gave my presentation online and I very much enjoyed the short discussion after my presentation. You can read an edited version of my talk in our recent post “Produce, Record, Reuse. The Life Cycle of 8th-century Greek Accounting Documents.”
