Looking for Participants: Supervised Exercise Programme for Chronic Low Back Pain!

Looking for Participants: Supervised Exercise Programme for Chronic Low Back Pain!

Do you suffer from chronic low back pain lasting more than 3 months? If so, you may be eligible to take part in a research-based exercise program that could help with pain management and improve your quality of life.

What is this exercise programme, and what are its benefits?

This programme, delivered as part of a research project by the University of Edinburgh, compares the effects of Aquatic Exercises and Land-based Exercises on chronic low back pain. It may reduce your pain, improve functional disability, enhance sleep quality, and increase overall quality of life.

Who can take part?

Adults aged between 18 and 65 years who have had chronic nonspecific low back pain for over three months (with no specific medical cause).

What’s the cost?

FREE—The sessions are provided without charge as part of the University of Edinburgh’s research programme. Additionally, participants will receive a £20 gift voucher as a thank-you gesture upon completion of the programme.

Where do the exercise sessions take place?

The programme is conducted at the St Leonard’s Indoor Swimming Pool (Aquatic Exercises) and Exercise Hall (Land-based Exercises) at St Leonard’s Building, Holyrood Road, University of Edinburgh, EH8 8AQ.

How often and how long is the programme?

The intervention includes three sessions per week (each lasting 45–60 minutes) for 12 weeks (36 sessions overall), along with two additional visits for assessments.

What if I can’t commit to three sessions a week?

We are running multiple sessions each week and expect you to attend at least two. However, we are flexible with timings and schedules to accommodate your availability.

When does the programme start?

We plan to start in Early May 2025. Late starters might also be accommodated if space is available, so feel free to contact us even if you cannot begin immediately.

Can I choose my preferred type of exercise (Aquatic or Land)?

Participants will be randomly allocated to either Aquatic Therapy or Land Exercises following initial assessments. However, both types of exercise are specifically tailored and beneficial for chronic low back pain management.

I’m not a strong swimmer; do I need swimming skills for aquatic therapy?

Not at all! Aquatic exercises take place in shallow water (around waist depth), and no previous swimming experience is required. Our physiotherapist and pool staff will be there to support you at every step.

It sounds interesting! How can I get more information or sign up?
