ASTROMOVES: Studying Astrophysicists' Careers and other Cultural Astronomy Topics

ASTROMOVES is funded by the European Union in the form of an Marie Skłodowska Curie Action Individual Fellowship. This blog shares research findings and discussions about ASTROMOVES, but also captures the other Cultural Astronomy research and activities of PI Jarita Holbrook. The reader may find here information about Astrophysics Culture, African Indigenous Astronomy, and Indigenous Astronomy in general.

ASTROMOVES Impostor Phenomenon Film

Impostor Syndrome & Belonging

In October 2024, I premiered the Impostor Phenomenon film at the International Center for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) in Perth, Australia. I had screened earlier versions of the film in Scotland, always to astrophysicists and other scientists in astronomy & physics departments. The astrophysics community knows it as ‘Impostor Syndrome’ which is what I use in the title and during the interviews. The film runs for 14:33 minutes, perfect for showing in the classroom with time for discussion. The film is a good starting point for discussions; things that have emerged are life-work balance, why is it not gendered in astrophysics, how common it is reported to be, and how helpful a film like this is. All the ASTROMOVES films are the research outputs from the EU funded ASTROMOVES project, thus they are freely available. Everyone appearing in the film has given their consent. The film is linked below, on YouTube but is unlisted. If you do use the film, please send me an email: I want to keep track of how many people have seen the film.

A thank you goes to all the scientists appearing in the film:
Stefi Baum
Deatrick Foster
Guilherme Franzmann
Emily Freeland
Elizabeth George
Tana Joseph
Duncan Lorimer
Maura McLaughlin
Jan-Uwe Ness
Naomi Rowe-Gurney
Ricardo Schiavon
Joseph Zuntz
