Broadening Horizons: EMC Induction on Central Campus

In response to feedback from EMC members, another brilliant Induction introduced new members to the amazing venues in the Central Campus.

Following the success of the first Events Management Community (EMC) Induction earlier this year, a second induction was held on 23 October. In May, the induction introduced members to the venues on offer in Pollock Halls Estate. The October induction focussed on the venues within the Central Campus and Old College and introduced the hotels and apartments available through the University Hospitality & Events Collection.

The event was kickstarted by Dawn Dodd and Catherine Hetherington from information Services, introducing the EMC, its history, and how current and new members can use its benefits to the fullest. A series of talks followed, with Amanda Ferguson detailing the University’s Hospitality Collection, before introducing Gordon Dow and Sarah Jane Smith. Gordon demonstrated the event spaces in the Central Area, from McEwan Hall, the Playfair Library, and various venues across George Square, with Sarah rounding off the talks with an insight into the hotels, including The Scott, The Scholar, and the KM Hotel and Apartments. All these spaces can be found on the Old Town Campus University of Edinburgh Conferences and Events Venue Collection.

Catherine Hetherington, Collaboration Services Team Manager, said, ‘We’re so fortunate to have such a variety of stunning venues within the University estate.’

Attendees enjoyed a delicious lunch (especially the salted caramel brownies) provided by the University of Edinburgh Hospitality Collection. This gave new members a chance to network with and learn from each other’s events management experience.

Following this delightful lunch, new members were given a tour by Gordon from the Raeburn Room (Old College) around the Central Area, including the fabulous Playfair Library. Building on the variety of spaces offered in Pollock Halls, newer members of the EMC were shown more venues to hold events, allowing event planners to use whatever space fits their type of event.

Heather MacBain, Head of Marketing, said, ‘Today’s session was a great overview of the community journey so far and the amazing event venues that staff can use for anything…If you are a UoE staff member and don’t know about the Events Management Community. Get to know! It could be your lifeline to feeling more supported and having an elite team of events professionals on speed dial to help you.’

Watch this space and the IS News Page for future EMC events, including the first EMC conference, Greener Gatherings, which will be held in January 2025.
