The intertwining of ideas of nature and nationhood have been thoroughly studied by geographical and cognate disciplines. However, less attention has been paid to the relationship between nations and nonhuman animals. By means of qualitative methods, the paradigmatic cases of pig farming in Catalonia and salmon farming in Scotland serve as a lens to examine the intersections between animal politics, conservation and discourses on identity formation. Early stages of the research show connections between the symbolic attributes ascribed to nonhuman animals and everyday practices such as meat consumption and production.
